How Lord William Beresford Won The “Y.C.”
The deed by which Lord “William Beresford death was announced last week) won the Victoria Cross was described by Archibald Forbes as “ the bravest deed I ever saw.” Lord William returning to a wounded man, confronted the Zulus with his revolver while uring the wounded man to mount his (Beres(ord’s) horse. The wounded man demurred, and it was only when Lord William swore, with clenched fists, that he would punch his head, that the man consented. Sergeant O’Toole, who also went back, shot Zulu after Zulu, and then assisted Lord William with the wounded man. When Lord William was commanded to Windson to receive his V.C. ho plainly told her Majesty that he could not receive the honor unless it was shared by O’Toole. The next Gazette announced that the proudest reward a British soldier could aspire to had been conferred on Sergeant Edmond O’Toole, of Barker’s Horse.
