THE SIXTH CONTINGENT.

To Consist of 500 Men.

Wellington, This Day. Government lias decided that the Sixth Contingent shall consist of 500 men made up as follows Otago, Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland 105 each ; Wanganui 20, New Plymouth, Napier and Gisborne 15 each. The number enrolled in all parts of the colony is 1,308 out of over 2,000 applications. [As Greymonth is sending 18 men, it is evident the above figures are not quite correct. —Ed. E.S.] A steamer of 6,000 tons belonging to an English firm which was used by one of the Australian colonies as a troopship, lias beau chartered to carry the Sixth Contingent. The name, however, has not yet been disclosed. Slie is expected to leave Wellington on Sunday, the 20th, and Auckland on the 25th. With regard to the despatch of the Sixth Contingent, Mr Ward states that it is intended to gather all the Southern men and those from the south part of the North Island in Wellington for despatch to the front. The troopship will then go to Auckland ami pick up the northern portion of the Contingents. Lieutenant Ross (Fourth Contingent) and Sergeant Hogg (First Contingent) returned to-day from the front by the Monowai. The latter brings nows that Captain Hayhurst, who went over to Sydney to the celebrations, lias taken command of the returned New Zcalandby the Harlech Castle, now in the New South Wales capital.
