THE HOKITIKA RACES.
(west coast tubs.)
Notwithstanding our a aticipations of fair weather yesterday, the slemants gave us the lie. At 330 yesterday morning the clouds were disappearing and the wind working round to the west, As soon as people began moving about the streets the weather again threatened. When a train arrived from Greymouth will some 600 or 700 passengers it commencfd to rain and continued in that mood throughout the afternoon. The stewards of the Racing Club, the horse owners, trainers and jockeys, and 100 or so cf the general public went to the race course but they soon found that racing was out of the question and so the races w ere postponed till to-day. Last evening the river was much swollen.and a groat deal of drift wood came down. Amidst other unconsidered trifles carried out to sea was a small raf; made of flax sticks which had probably boon made high up the river. After yesterday’s experience we scarcely think it safe to venture a picdiction as to what tc-day may bring forth, but should it clear the races will bo proceeded with as the course was in excellent order. _
