r l he new “Land Act” of last Session came into force on the Ist of this month. Penalties not exceeding .£SO are enacted for trespass of cattle on Crown lands, and for unlawful felling of timber; al o for lighting a lire within, or allowing it to spread to and destroy, any growing timber or forest. The apprehension of offenders against this latter clause may be with or without warrant by any peace officer, or by the owner of the property destroyed, or person authorised in writing by owner; but the offenders must be taken forthwith before some justice of the peace to be dealt with. Deferredpayment arrears may be sued for. Any person of the age of 17 years may become a selector, the exception being, those who have forfeited any deferred-payment land; owners of pre-emptive rights or of G4O acres of land in fee; freeholders through homestead system; married women living with their husbands, and persons who have arranged to act as “dummies.”
