At the Auckland quarterly licensing meeting Inspector Cullen reported that at present the hofcelkeepers, with few exceptions, appeared to be observing the 11 o'clock closing. An Adelaide yacht, a new one rater, the Geisha, arrives by the Elingamite from Sydney on Monday, to take part in the North Shore Aquatic Carnival. It is contemplated to give Mr Pegmill a welcome by the aquatic organisations. The Geisha competes in three races for i'lOG prize, and for the One-rate Championship to which is attached the Internationa! Challenge Cup. December 7. A number of women w-ne convicted of sly g<og selling in the city, and were fined Jfs each, asd the liquor found or their premises was confiscated. LwERCAKGiLL, December 6. The Mosstiurn-Lumsden train ran ink and destroyed four of a mob of horses or Saturday. It is said, the animals got inte a cutting, and being unable to clamber ur ran on till they came to an open culvert where the train overtook them. The railway fencing question is a burning one about Lumsden just now, i he Department having removed the fence from the line. 1 which runs through the township, and started to prosecute the owners ot cattle that stray into the yards. Christchukch, December 6. The Committee formed by members oi the Industrial and Canterbury Agricul tural and Pastoral Association to secure the erection of the Industrial Hall for Christchurch has purchased a site of two acres in a central position. The estimated cost of land and buildings is £20,000, and arrangements are expected to be complete by next year. The present scheme provides for an Agricultural anel Industrial Hall specially built to be suitable for concerts, and provided with a modern organ. The Progressive Liberal Association has boen considering a system of the appointment of Justices of Peace, and has drafted the following recommendations : — (1) That in view of the extended Municipal Franchise all nominations of Justices should be made by the County Borough, or Town Council, or Road Board. (2) That Justices should serve a probation of twelve months before being allowed to adjudicate ; (3) That with a view to enabling Justices to acquire readily a knowledge of the duties of the position and of Jaw, a book dealing these matters should be prepared and supplied to each Justice. The Association also affirms the principle that appointments should not be in the nature of political rewards. December 7. At Lyttleton to-day, G. Ayers, a to bacconist, was fined £10 and costs for having a tobacco-cutting machine without warrant. In the action Stokes v. the Canterbury Stevedoring Association and the Union Steam Shipping Company, claim £100 damages for injuries sustained through falling down a bunker hole on the steamer Tarawera, Mr Beet ham, S.M., gave judgment for the defendants-
