The police in various parts of the Colouy have been instructed to keep a sharp look out for a party of escaped convicts from New Caledonia, information from Australia being to the effect that they are likely to make for some part of the New Zealand coast. Dunedin, September 17. At Mosgiel Elizabeth Crossan and William Crossan were charged with exposing whiskey and port wine for sale at Outram, without a license. Mr Carew, S.M., decided there was no evidence of exposure, and dismissed the case. At Hindon a child named Lye, aged four years, fell between the railway platform and a carriage and was killed. The twenty four hour's walking match was concluded on Saturday. After having gone 88 miles 14 laps Wmtrop retired, being then 7 laps behind J. Scott. After going 98 miles 6 laps T, Scott also retired. Joe Scott continued walking till tbe end of tbe 24 hours, and covered 111 miles. Thames, Sept 17. The body of John Cameron, 58, a miner, was found at the bottom of the Cainbria*shaft. At the inquest the verdict was the deceased was killed by throwing himself down the shaft while temporarily insane through illness. Christchurch, Sept. 16. A man named Campbell, a bootmaker, was found drowned at New Brighton this afternoon. Auckland, September 17. Charles Boden, a foreigner, was charged at the police Court to-day with stabbing Joseph Thompson with a pen knife. Dr Hooper, who is attending the injured man, said be did not deem him out of danger. He believed the lungs had been touched, as Thompson was spitting blood. Bail was refused until Thompson has b^en declared out of danger. The case was adjourned.
