o The following are the Traffic Returns for the Napier-Taranaki section for the four weeks ended 11th December, 1897, and for the corresponding four webks in 1896 : — 1897. 1896. Passengers 6,688 18 10 5,793 Id 3 Parcels ... 1,085 15 9 1,006 811 Goods ... 12,904 Jll 10,135 6 4 Mia'laneous 705 1 6 511 3 11 t-21,833 18 0 £17,446 17 5 ' Wool in 1897 was 6035 tons, as against 4,260 for 189G, merchandise 5,*98 tons in 1 897 as against 4,506 tons for 1896. These are facts which speak for themselves. The total railway re venue for the colony to date was £894,319 as against £819,344 for the same period in 1896, The expenditure for 1897 was £593,798, and for 1896 it was £526,865
