At the adjourned inquest on the body of Robert O'Rourke, who was found dead in tha public gardens, the analysis of the stomach showed araenic in sufficient quantities to have caused death. A verdict was returned that he died of arsenic poisoning, but by whom administered or where procured there was no evidence to show. C, Dawkius, who was injured while riding iv a hurdle race at Broadtields sports on Boxing Day, has died at Christchuich Hospital. At a meeting of the Orange Grand Lodge of the Middle Island of New Zealand a resolution was paised condemning the attempt to introduce State aid denominational schools by means of tbeTecbnical Education Bill, and stating the Grand Lodge's determination to oppose such attempts by every consti tutional means. The lodge holds its next annual meeting at Oamaru in December. 1898. Mrs T. S. Foster, the lady principal of the Christchurch Girls' High School, wife of the headmaster of the Christcbnrch West District School, died sad«. denly this afternoon at Raegiora, where she was visiting her husband's relations. Heart disease is supposed to be the cause of death. Mr Foster is away on a cycling tour to the West Coast. Wellington, December <30. The comparison of returns of Christmas postal and telegraphic traffic shows that Wellington had a substantial lead in the amount of both postal and telegraphic work put through. Messrs J. H. Lowe (Chief Engineer for Working Railways), and T. F. Ratheram (Locomotive Superintendent) have gone to Totaekara to conduct a Departmental enquiry into the circumstances under which a brake van became derailed on the day of the opening of the railway to Woodville. The Land Hoard to-day approved of the sub-division and prices of an estate of 300 acres, purchased by the Government under the Land for Settlement Act for the purpose of establishing workmen's homes at Johnson vi lie. It was stated that there had been many enquiries for land and that as prices would be about £9 to £100 per acre a workman would find it cheaper to purchase t. bouse and land ou the estate than to rent a house in Wellington. Some fifty men were now working on the estate. Ranger's reports upon village settlements in the Makuri Block were of a most encouraging nature.| This Day. Deceased saw active service with the French army in the Crimea, and was an officer in llie National Guards. Subsequeni.lv he took part in the fighting between tha forces of the Commune and and Caotral Governments. Deceased leaves a wife and' a young family. A married woman named Annie Springgay residing in Harding* Road, Spit, was found dead in bed today. At the inquest death was shown to have resulted from heart diseane. Her husband is working at Giaborne.
