In the Legislative Council last Saturlay the Young Persons Protection Bill knd the Wages Protection Bill were both ailed. At the Police Court this morning fohans Kennberg was charged with being Irunk at the railway station on Saturday last. He was fined 5s and costs. Mr G. Kirton, J.P., occupied the Bench. Lieut.-Col. Newall has granted permission to Captain Kirton to cancel the Government parade of the Manchester Rifles appointed to be held on Thursday next. Parades for January arc advertised to-d&y. We have been informed thiit the young man, Mr F. Philpß, vfho was injured while shearing on Mr Jones' farm at Cheltenham recently, is progressing favorably and it is probable he will not lose the sight of hig eye. The annual distribution of prizes in connection with the Sacred Heart School Wanganui, took place on Friday. Miss Ethel Light secured prizes for arithmetic and writing, and also special prir.es for pianoforte music and singing. Miss Carrie Light secured a special prize for singing. Where to buy your Christmas outfits of clothing? — At the Bon Marche, where you will find an endless variety of men's euits, youths' suits and boys' suits, coats, trousers, and coats and vests, all at sale 1 prices. Spence and Spence are giving substantial reductions all round until Xmas eve. In the New Zealand Herald of December 7th, mention is made of a fruit, new to Auckland, called the " logan berry," which is now being introduced. It is a cross between the blackberry and the raspberry, and in America is considered superior to either, on account of its flavour and the exceeding smallness of its seeds. Labouchere, in Truth of November 4th, said : " I know a lady (blind) who has teen looking for a husband for the last five and twenty years, hitherto without success owing to certain defects of physiognomy. The lady is a charming girl." A blind " girl " who has been looking for a husband for a quarter of a century is surely " a rare bird " and tough at that. During the argument on the special case aa to the Horowhenua costs on Thursday, says the Post, counsel for the Public Trustee cited a judgment of the late Mr Justice ItichmoncJ, in which he remarked, " Unwillingness on the part of a Government to pay its just debts can scarcely be supposed to exist." '"Ah," remarked Judge Denniston with a smile, " that was many years ago." We have to thank the editor of the Otago Witness for a copy of the Witness Christmas Annual for 1897. It is beautifully illustrated and the Colonial tale by '• Fabian Bell " is very interesting. A apecial feature i« that like /* string of pearls on a silver thread, the narrative takes the reader to many of the most noted beauty spots of the West Coast Sounds, which are faithfully depicted by the artist. Altogether the publication is the best ever produced in the colony. On Saturday last, at Palmerston, Mr Hull, Stock Inspector, ordered the destruction of two cows and a bullock which he suspected were diseased. On the bullock being killed and examined no traces of any disease could be found, the internal organs appearing to be quite health}-. Thin ia the first animal which has been killed at Mr Hull's instigation, suspected of being diseased, but which was not affected. In this case the Stock Department will compensate the owner for hit loss. No one should miss seeing Milson's Christmas Bazaar — the Christmas sight of Fetlding ! The Bazaar is simply packed with presents, and to make more accommodation a large tent has been added to the back of the shop for the little folks' toys which are of every conceivable description. Toys for girls, toys for boys, toys amusing, toys mechanical. In fact, such an amusing collection as should delight the hearts of everybody has found its way from England, the Continent, America, China and Japan, into the Manchester Bazaar. What might have been a serious accident happened at Mrs Hastie's Hotel on Saturday afternoon. Mr li. F. Haybittle was engaged in removing a hogshead of beer, and while assisting to raise it from the cellar, when on a level with the street the rope broke and the cask, weighing six hundredweight, rushed back on to him. Mr Haybittle, who is by means weak, was able to stop and hold it until assistance arrived, fortunately escaping trifch only skin wounds on the head and face, and contusions on the body and arms. This is the second time a cellar rope has broken in Feilding and we would suggest that periodical tests of their strength should be made.
