The threatened general strike among tbe railway employees in Ireland, owing to the refusal of the principal companies to recognise the Amalgamated Society of Railway Servants as the representative of the men, has been abandoned. A ballot has been taken among tbe cotton • spinning operatives upon the question of the proposed reduction of wages with the following result:— ln favour of accepting the reduction, 37 ; against, 13,196. The ballot amongst the Federated Master Cotton-spinners having resulted in a majority against tbe proposal to reduce the wages of employees, they have withdrawn the notification of the intended reduction of 5 per cent. December 8 Mr Barnes (Secretary to the Engiu eers's Society), aud Sellicks (Chairmaui are arranging with the National Convention of the Trades Unionists, as pro posed to levy 3d per wep k per week per member, which will yield i-17,750. This will, it is believed suffice to maintain the strikers-
Thy railway men have abandoned the idea of taking united action and are adopting the suggestion that they should approach the various companies separately. It is therefore unlikely tbe strike will eventuate.
