Heavy Earthquake.
One of the heaviest shocks of earth quake experienced in this district occurred at 2.43 tbis morning. Tbe direction was from north to south, aud tbe shock lasted about half a minute. A number of chimneys were displaced, and a good deal of crockery and other household articles were dislodged, and in several instances some valuable articles were broken. The brick buildings in town appear to have stood the shock very well.

At about 20 minutes to three this morning the sharpest shock of earthquake ever experienced in Wanganui took place. The shock last about two minutes. Windows were broken in all directions, and the damage must be enormous. Wellington, Tbis Day.
At Woodville tbe shock lasted fully forty-five seconds and was the severest felt for years. At Pahiatua and Carterton the earthquake was as severely felt as in Wellington.
At about 2.40 this morning a prolonged aud severe earthquake was experienced. The shake was preoeded by a rumbling noise. This was followed by a Blight tremor, and then came » voilent jerk, which lasted several seconds. Buildings swayed to and fio, several of tbe doors at the General Post Office were burst open, bells were set ringing and chimney pots were thrown down. The Go vernment Life Insurance Buildings escaped damage, and so did the Free Public Library. Wakapuaka, This Day. Two distinct shocks of earthquake were experienced here about 2.42 this morning. They were accompanied with heavy rumbling, but the shocks themselves were not severe. Hawera, This Day. The earthquake was felt here with extraordinary severity) but no material damage resulted.
