A Retiring Agent-General. I " Telegraph. Press Association- Copyright i London. December 2. \ Tbe London Colonial Club entertained Sir Saul Samuel, tbe retiring Agent- < General for New South Wales, at a banquet. All tbe Agent Generals were present, except Mr Thos. Playford and | Mr W. P. Beeves. These aentlemen | sent apologies, regretting that they were . unable to attend. | Sir Saul Samuel, replying to the toast of his health, deprecated Agencies being turned into large shop windows in tbe ; city. He considered that the task of purchasing millions* worth of railway material and conducting large financial operations were quite as mncb _a com* mercial operation as the promotion of a butter trade. It waß, he thought, onwise for a Government to promote trade in a manner entirely impracticable. An Extraordinary Scene. o During the past few days (says tbe Southern Australian Register of No vem i ber 11) there has been talk about the end of the world being at baud, and on Wednesday afternoon (November 10), when tbe heavens assumed so remark able an aspect many people actually believed their last hour bad arrived. One affrighted woman was seen kneeling in a main street of the city, praying aloud. Two men passed by, and were so impressed with tbe significance of tbe moment that they decided to have a last drink together, and adjourning to tbe nearest hotel took their beverage " extra long." So often, however, has it been foretold that the "end of the world was near, that people generally have become sceptical, and little alarm was occasioneJ on Wednesday except amongst children. In several public schools, when the sun became so overcast, tbe sun took on a blood red hue, and the atmosphere assumed such a peculiar yellow tinge, the yonng folk became quite frightened, and scores of them began to cry, while a ' panic occurred at the North Adelaide School. At about a quarter to throe several girls standing near the back door were attracted by the lurid aspect of the sun. They at once turned back and rushed into the large class room screaming out that tbe world was on fire. Immediately a shock went through the school. Tbe whole of tbe girjs except one class stampeded from their seats, and even one of the teachers joined in the exodus. One class came trooping down tbe passage wbicb connects tbe boys' and girls' schools, and before anything could be done the disorder was communicated to tbe first, second, and third form of boys. Mr J. Donnell, head maßter of the North Adelaide School, when seen by one of onr reporters on Wednesday nißbt, said, - Fully 400 children joined in the panic, and fortunately all tbe doors were wide open for ventilation purposes, or the results might baye been serions. As it was, I believe one or two girls fainted, and many others cried." A Remarkable Wheat Crop. The New Bouth Wales Minister for Agriculture has received a report from the acting manager of the Wagga Wagga experimental farm, relative to an excellent yield from some very late sown wheat which is exciting marked interest among tbe farmers of tbe Wagga Wagga district. The wheat was sown in the month of August on ordinary Kiverina land, ploughed 6iu deep after July 1, and which was cleared of green timber only a few months previously. The yield is estimated at about twenty bushels to tbe acre. Tbe crop is a good one, and in most marked contrast to those in the surrounding district which are already being largely out for hay, as they do not promise to yield much grain. L- F. Farley conducts a large mercantile business at Liberty Hill, Ga. H* says : " One application of Cham, ber lain's Pain Balm relieved me of a severe pain in my back. I think it 0.X." For lame back, rheumatism, ■euralgia, swellings, sprains, bruises, burns and scalds no other liniment can approach Chamberlain's Pain Balm. It is intended especially for these diseases and is famous for its cures. For sale by Farmers' Co-op. Association, Feilding.
