The Feilding Star, Oboua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. FRIDAY, DECEMBER 3, 1897. BETTER LATE THAN NEVER.
We learn from an exchange tbat the Manawatu Railway Company intend competing with the Government Woodville railway by increasing the speed on their line so that the through journey to Wellington will be reduced from twelve hours as at present to a nine hours' journey. This will be done by avoiding some stations and by not carrying heavy goods. If tbe Company had done this two years ago they would have won more popularity than they are likely to gain by considering the convenience and comfort of the travelling public at the eleventh hour, when the concession is forced from them by tbe fact of the Government line between Woodville to Wellington being now within a few days of completion. However, having commenced to improve in their system of management we would suggest they go a stop further and abolish the double terminal charges which now obtain. They would lose nothing thereby while they would gain much in the estimation of the business people and farmers from Longburn to Taranaki. In that connection as the people on this coast will be to a very large extent the feeders of both the Government and the Vfauawatu lines, they will soon be in a position to compel that consideration which they have so long deserved ■mi fur so lony been denied. It may i>e expected the competition between the Government and the Company will he keen, also that as a natural consequence the present very high rnt«?s will be considerably reduced both as regards freights and passengers.
