Feilding Borough Council.

The ordinary monthly meeting of the FeildiDg Borough Council was held in the Council Chambers last evening. Present— The Mayor (Mr W. A. L. Bailey) Cra W. G. Haybittle, W. Dickson, B. F. Hayhittle, W. G. Shearer, P. Thomson, E. Goodbehere, G. H. Saywell, G. W. Fowles, J. Gonld. Correspondence was received md dealt with as follows : — From Cemetery Committee, that the road from the railway line to the cemetery required attention; also, that portions of the cemetery be cleared of manuka scrub, tot grass, aid other rubbish. It was suggested th.it £30 be spent on these works before next winter. —With reference to this mat er Or W. G. Haybittle said they had £4<) in hand and they thought it desirable to spend it in improvements. The Public Works Committee recommended that a band rail be erected at the bridge in West street lead ng to the Sandon road. The committee reported that footpaths in Beattie and Stafford streets bad been formed ani kerbed daring the month as applied for.— Adopted. From Railway Engineer, Wanganni, ntating it was necessary, in order to provide for future extension of sidings at the FeildiDg railway station, that the present crossing through the yard in line with Eyre street should be closed. With a view to this a road had been metalled from Eyre to Gladstone streets and the Department were prepared to hand it over to the borough, and asking for the Council's decision in the matter. From E. Larcomb, offering to prepare plans for abattoirs. — Referred to Abattoir Committee. From Finance Committee reoommeoding accounts amounting to Jtl'Yd 7s lid be passed for payment. — Adopted. From A. Wilson and Co., crging the Council to form footpath in front of their properties in Warwick street. — Cr Fowles said there was no hurry for this work and the roadmen would attend to it as soon as possible ; they were very busy at present. From J. Colville, offering to give a price for making dog collars. — No action taken. From J. Darragb, asking tie Council to form footpath in front o)' his new premises in Manchester Square. Resolved (Crs \V. G. Haybittle— Gould) That a sum not exceeding £'40 be spent in completing the gravelling of Main road through the ceineter}' and generally improving same. llesolvcd (Ci-s Goodbehere — Saywell), That with reference to the letter from Railway Department this Council cannot agree to take over the piece of road to the gas works from Eyre street unless the road be made the proper widtr . Resolved (Crs W. G. HayHttle—Bailey), That before closing the crossing at Eyre street, the Railway Department be requested to erect an overhead bridge at that part of the railway lint. Resolved (Crs Dickson — R. F. Haybittle), That the matter of forming footpath on the West side of Kirn jolton road between Derby and Lytton streets be left in the hands of the Public Vbrks Committee to report. — This lratter was introduced by Cr W. G. Haj bittle, who moved that the work be done but withdrew his motion as Councillors favored the Public Works Committee reporting on it. Resolved, That Mr C. N. Cotterell's application to have his name placed on the burgess roll in respect of section 104 instead of A. Steadinan be granted. Resolved (Cra Goodbehen — Saywell) That the necessary steps be taken to raise the loan required (£48.1 6s 8d) to repair the Aorangi bridge. Resolved (Crs W. G. Haybittle—Dickson), That the Clerk take immediate steps to collect the outstanding rate?. Resolved, That tho footpaths in Manchester Square and Macartbc r Street m front of J. Darraph's new premises be constructed as requested on the usual terms Resolved, That the reqeest of Mr Sherwill, Secretary of the Feilding Athletic Club, re athletes training on the Oval, be referred to the .Park Committee to deal with the same. According to notice of motion Cr Gould moved, and Cr Shearer seconded, That tbe Engineer be instructed to prepare plans and specifications for a truss bridge across the Makino stream in Denbigh street to be in by the next ordinary meeting of the Council. Iv speaking to the motion Cr Gould stated they had still to come in during the present financial year £644 12s 3d. It would cost from £200 to £ 140 to erect the bridge, which would leave £80 a month to pay current expenses. Cr Goodbehere pointed out that their overdraft was £825 while their expenses would be £750 which, less tbe estimated revenue, would leave an overdraft of £1000, tbat was if all rates were collected, which was doubtful. With the bridge their overdraft would bptfc £1200. Cr Saywell supported the motion. Cr Thomson also supported tbe motion, saying it was better to spend the money on this work then on picking weeds around the town ; there was no economy at all in that. The motion was carried.
