Gardner Bros.' Musical Company
The Gardner Bros.' Musical Comedy Company commenced their short Feild ing season at the Assembly Rooms last evecing to a largo audience, which at once recognised the ability of the performers, for at tbe finish of the opening item it was a case of encore after encore. The company presented a refined programme, replete with mnsical gems, and given by performers who showed they have reached a high state of perfection in their art. " The Holy City," as a slide-trombone solo by Mr Fred Gardner, was a splendid instrumentation, and in response to an inevitable encore the performer responded with " The Swanee River," which was also received with thunderous applause. Mr John A. Gardner's violin solo " Birds of tbe Forest " was a treat that a Feilding audience seldom have, the performer displaying great mastery over his instrument, and the good opinion formed cf his playing was greatly enhanced by tbo manner in which Raff's popular "Cavatiua" was handled. For these items, also, tue performer, had to reappear. When a player receives a triple encore it is a sure indication that be has succeeded in pleasing bis audience. This compliment was bestowed on Mr A. Wyuyard Joss, whose mandolin playing has uot been excelled here. Tbe piccolo solo of Mr A. Gardner was also ' d seivedly encored. Miss E. L. Featon I posse ies a voice which she used with | excellent effect, and when she sang tha j " Boys of the Old Brigade " and " The King's Own " she hit the popular taste and in each solo an encore was de- ! manded. Miss Marie Quinn in " The Flight of Ages" and "Espanita" displayed an extremely sweet soprtno and was recalled for both her so igs. Miss Amy Boyce and Mr Harry Etrle gave an American sketch entitled " The Doctor " which thoroughly amused the audience. The musical olio by the company was in itself alone worth the price of admission and at tbe conclusion of the piece rouuds of applause burst forth from the audknee, their encore piece being equally rs good. The programme concluded witu the latest Drury Lave success the shadow pantomime, which sent the people Lome iv a good humor. The "entriil oj jnion is that tbe pompany is tho finest which has yet appeared here and wo predict a crowded house to-night, which is thuir final ap pruiaOLe. The mauagemeut have decided to reduce the price to 3s, 2h, and Is, so as to allow everyone to hear the company.
