Later. Details from all parts of the coastline show that the sale did tremendoua damage to shipping and buildings. The Thames rose far above its ordinary level aud flooded the embankment, swamping the Woolwich Arsenal. The inundation covered an area a mile and a half long and 300 yards wide. The electric lighting plant was submerged. Seven thousand soldiers assisted in rescuing stores and saving powder magazines. The various works were seriously [ injured. The sea swept the streets of Dover and destroyed the sea wall at Seaham, Durham, the centre of an extensive coal trade. Mauy buildings were destroyed at Margate, Rampgate and Chatham, and also the promenade at Hcrne Bar, Kent. Six wrecks occurred ou the Norfolk Coast, the whole of tbe crews perishing. Tho eastern coast suffered terribly. Scarcely a town escaped. All the coastal ports report wrecks, involving gre it loss of life. In many iv.stances large sections of the foreshores have been washed away aud shipyaadß destroyed. The life boat service did great work in rescuing many lives. The whole of the Channel steam service has been suspended.
