Pemberton Notes.
The telephone is at last an established fact with offices opened at Peep o'-Day, Pemberton and RaDgiwahia. The opening of which will be a great convenience to the whole district. The new instruments have been placed in all the offices and are working splendidly The Telegraph Department deserve much' credit for the energy shown in pushing the work through.
A fire' occurred at Ruahine on Thnrsdav night at 11.30 by which the store of Messrs G. L>. Lay & Co. was entirely destroyed. There were several persons smoking in the store that evening before closing and it is thought that a match may bave been thrown down and caught in something which smouldered into a blaze some hours later. It is most unfortunate for Mr Lay as I understand he was just working tip a good business and thr fire will come very hard upon him. 1 do not know what insurance (if any) was on the building and stock. We are at last experiencing some fine weather and the farmers are making good use of it to get their shearing done and Messrs Windleburn Bros, [are kept very busy with tbeir teams taking oat the wool. It is to be hoped the contract for improving the slip at Mr Moore'? will soon be started for it is impossible to get on it at present with much of a load.
Mr Manning, in charge of government work, has started metalling Pukirimu road. I understand be intends to metal it through to Ruakino. This will be a great blessing to those in that direction.
