Volunteer Items.
The Manchester Rifles held a Govern* ment parade last evening. There was a good attendance, Capt. Eirton being in command. The men were exercised in company movements by Capt. Eirton, Lieats. Barltrop and Pleaw.nts, and in the manual and sword bayonet exercise* by Sergt-Major McMillan, and acquitted themselTes very creditably. Capt. Kirton announced that a message had been received from the ofltaus and me* of the Napier Rifles conveying their compliments and regards to the offieera and men of the Manchester Rifle*. A. hearty yota of thanks wa3 passed to Capt. Parker, of tbe Rang tikei Jteyai Rifles, Marion, for bis kindness in so promptly complying with a request for a loan of ammunition. A letter waa read from tbe Feilding Brass Band thanking the corps for taking part io tbe procession on October 8, and for their attendance at the entertainment on that date. Vol. McMilJac was eleoted to fill tbe vacancy on the Shooting Committee causpd by the resignation of tbe Secretary, Vol. Wilson. There will be no parade of the Manchester Rifles on Thursday next, the* 18th iost, being Show day. Tbe Shooting Committee of tbe Man-, Chester Rifles met after parade, Lieut. Barltrop in tbe chair. Vol. A W. Parker was elected to the position of secretary. It was decided that tbe number of competitions for Lieut. Pleasants' prize be altered from four to five, tbe three highest to count. Tbe third competition will take place on Thursday next, tbe 18th init., at 5 a.n. and 9 a.m. Ammunition wil Lbe supplied on tbe range. The ranges for the third competition are 800 yds, 500 yds and 600 yds. Handicaps will appear in Saturday's Stak.
