The Victorian Derby this year wa* run under exceptionally favourable eircumstnnceK for a classic event, the weather being glorious nnd the track in splendid order. Auvmn upptMml in the pink of condition, and was surrounded by ft dense crowd of admirer-; before leaving the. paddock. Despite the fact that he was beaten on the track the previous day by his stable mate Manfred, and that his split hoof \va« bound round with waxends, his supporters never lost confidence and accorded him such staunch support thnt poncillers did not take less than '2 to 1 at the finish. The confidence displnyed I>\ the. followers of the St. Allinns colt did not daunt the Sydney contingent, who freely nc- ' cepted .f to 1 available against Ambcrite, who also looked a picture. Passing the five furlong post, Manfred left an opening <>ti the rails for the favorite. Eiridsdalc also essayed to jjet through, but in tin- effort the Ta^nianin.n colt struck Auniin's near hind le^\ and the favorite dropped hack to fifth position. On returning to the weighing enclosure. Aunnn's hind leg was Mceding freely. An examination disclosed that the coronet near the hind leg had been badh cut when the collision with Eiridsdale occurred. The success of the Carbine colt was very welcome to the ring, for it ensed considerably their liabilities in connection [ with double wagering. A Victorian squatter, who bets on a princely scale, is understood to have lost several thousands. The middle half-mile of the Derby was traversed in /iljsec, and the last four furlongs in 51^ sec. The railway receipts were X'.">73 over last year.
