(Per Press Association.) Melbournk, Nov 1. After the rain cleared off this morning Positano covered a mile and a half in2min 443 sec in great style. Amberite dashed over a mile in ltnin 46sec, finishing well. Auruni and Manfred executed a precisely s.milar gallop, Aurum being shaken up towards the finish, pulling up sound. The Merry Boy moved very freely in a strong gallop over 11 furlongs in 2min 34sec. Ayrshire ran nine furlongs nicely in 2min 2sec. Wait a-Bit covered a mile and a half in even time, pleasing his admirers immensely. Gaul' is and The Grafter spurted four furlongs on the tan in 53 j sec. The best of the pair will shake the Cup to-mor-row. Coil traversed a mile in liuin 47issc. Fucilc took matters more steadily, registering a mile in lmin 49scc. There was some spirited wagering during the afternoon, 2000 to 200 each Coil and Wait-a-Bit being laid, 1000 to 100 Amber; te, f>oo to 50 Positano, 3000 to 180 Parthenopneus, 8000 to 350 Trent, 1000 to 40 Ayrshire, 4000 to 130 The Merry Boy, 500 to 25 Gaulus, 1500 to 45 Manfred, 1500 to 35 The Grafter, 2500 to 50 Bundook, .500 to 5 each True Blue, Amnesty and The Chevallier (tkn). Owing to reputed lameness after the Melbourne Stakes, Toreador and Delaware were knocked backed to 100's to 2. It was cold and showery during the day, but there is every indication of fine weather to- morrow. Melbourne is crowded with visitors.

A further test of Gray's Australian starting machine was made at the Hurst Park Meeting, a field of 13 horses being started in capital style, and the machine produced a most favourable impression.

Mrs Langtry's Australian-bred horse Mermr n (Grand Flaneur — Seaweed) won the November Plate Handicap, two miles, at the above-named meeting in a canter.
