Major Sommerville and the local representatives of the CoDtingtnt and the Bisley Team were entertained at a smoke concert on Saturday nigbfc.
The body of a man named Samuel Henderaon, a farmer, was found in the river yesterday. Henderson left a hotel at midnight on the 19th instant after securing a change of clothes. At the District Court, before Judge Kettle, William Reid, of Palmerston, was sentenced to 12 months for theft of watch. A similar sentence was imposed on Edgar Davies, Hunterville, for larceny of .£22 10s, money entrusted to him to purchase a watch. Both prisoners had been convicted previously for similar offences.

The directors of ths National Insurance Company have declared a dividend of ninepence per share for the half year, making a total distribution for the year of Is 6d per share At a meeting of the Bakers and Pastry Cooks Union it was resolved to send a wire to the Premier, asking for bakers to be included in the provisions of the Eight Hours' Bill now before Parliament, as from past experience the members of the Union are of opinion that the work of bakers can easily be accomplished in eight hours. A dispute has ocenrred between the carpenters and bnilders as to payment for 47 or 48 hours. The men work 47 and demand payment for 48 hours. About forty men strnck this morning but it is possible an arrangement may be come to.

Richard Henry Keast, described as an "evangelist," has been committed for trial on a charge of forging a letter, purporting to be signed by Lucy Aspin, for L 2, and uttering the same for LI. In his evidence Mr Aspin said his daughter was engaged to Keast, who promised that she would get L3OOO down on her wedding day.
