A Sailor Drowned
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, October 27. James Andersou, a seaman on the ship Ben Nevis, was drowned on Tues day night by walking over Rattray street Wharf. He was proceeding on board with the carpenter, and after stopping to light his pipe walked over the wharf, despite the warning cry of the carpenter, who had gone ahead. Thomas McGladery, the carpenter, pave the alarm, and without waiting to take off his overcoat jumped in after his shipmate, but he could not reach him before he sank. The carpenter said he thought the deceased wa« shortsighted. i A verdict was returned of accidentally ' drowned, the coroner's jury adding a rider recommending McGladery to the notice of the Humane Society for his bravery. Anderson, who was TA years of age was a native of Glasgow, where lie had a sister living. He shipped ;U Melbourne.
