At the half yearly communication of the Masonic Grand Lodge of Now Zealand it was announced a letter had been received from tho Secretary of the United Grand Lodge of England stating there was no reason why recognition of the New Zealand Constitution should not be formally declared after Sept., 1897. It was reselved the office of the Grand Lodge be moved to Chriitchurch on April next. The half yearly communication of the Grand Lodge of Freemasons, New Zea land Constitution, waa opened at the Freemasons' Hall, Princes street, and is the largest gathering at a Masonic function held in the city. Wellington, October 28. A deputation consisting of niue mem bers of the House waited on the Premier and Minister of Justice, and urged that ex Chief Detective Henderson, of Christ church, should be granted an enquiry before a Magistrate into the charges which led to his dismissal from the force. The Ministers declined to accede to the request. The case of Samuel v Downes was argued before the Court of Appeal this morning. In this case a similar point involved to that raised in the case Ruddenklau v. Ruddenklau under sec tion 33 of Life Assurance Policies Act, 1884. The Court reserved its decition. A close scrutiny of votes shows that the poll of Petone ratepayers, in refer ence to the loan of £2000 to complete the drainage works, was lost through the required value of votes not being recorded. One or two more voters would have given the necessary preponderance in value. A tbirtecn-roomed dwelling bouse near Otaki, belonging to F. Ryder, was destroyed by fire. It was insured for .£6OO in the Phoenix Office. Nkw Pltmouth, October 28. Inspector McGovern arrested six more Datives this morning at Waihi, as the outcome of the ploughing operations on Monday. Waipawa, October, 28. The ceremony of ' Saluting the Flag" wa« introduced into the Waipawa School yesterday in the presence of a large assembly. Speeches wore delivered hy several townsmen, and tho children were put through a number of evolutions, concluding witb a march past and the salute of the flag. Christchubch, This Day. Mabel Poone, aged 2^ yearn, was killed at Liuwood last night. Sho was knocked down by a horse which, in attempting to jump over her, struck her on th* head.
