(Per Press Association. Wellington, October 26. The Penguin broke down on a voyage from Lyttelton to Wellington this morning. The signalmen at the Heads could ace her this afternooa about 20 miles east of Cape Campbell, lying broadside on to the scan. The Takapnna was sent out to render assistance, and she is expected to tow the disabled vessel into port by about 8 o'clock to nipht October 27. A deputation from the Bakers' Union waited on (be Premier this evening, and pointed out the difficulties in the way of bakers conforming to the provisions of the eight hours' Bill, owing to oircumstances of trade. They «sked that bakers be exempted from the provisions of the proposed enactment. The Premier said there was no desire to injure any trade, and whero there were exceptional circumstances exemptions would be made He would carefully consider the request of the deputation. Napieb, October 26. A firm of solicitors, acting on bebalf of a constable named Ramsay, who is stationed at Wairoa, bag called npon the Rev. H. W. J. Miller for a withdrawal of statements contained in a letter published in the Daily Telegraph of the 14th inst., failing which action will be taken in the Supreme CourtMr Miller declined to do as requested, and has instructed bis solicitor to accept service of auy writ which may issue. The letter in question was the outcome of the rather sensational sni cide of a youth named Lindergreen at Wairoa. The clergyman in bis communication traversed the conduct of the constable at the inquest on the deceased and also commented on the latter's action in drinking and playing cards with Lindergreen and others on the night of tbe fatality. Auckland, Oct 26. Samuel Adams was charged on remand to day at Pueroa, before Messrs J. Nathan and Col. Clough, J.'sP., with arson, on the 7th October. Detective Middern, who represented the police, applied for a remand till Friday, to en* able tbe Crown Prosecutor to attend. The Bench refused to remand him, and the information was dismissed. It is understood a fresh information will immediately be laid. Tbe Government intends opening up part of the Pubipuhi kauri forests in the Whangarei district. Tbe Government steamer Tutanekai landed a large quantity of railway sleepers at Whangarei for the extension of the line towards the bush. Tbe engineering survey on tbe new road from Ruato on Lake Rotoito to Tarawera has been completed, and 19 miles of splendid yiewß of Lake Rotoitoi, Tarawera. Okataina, and Okareka can be obtained from it. Sergt. Ellison, appointed to the charge of the Wanganui Police Station, leaves on Thursday for his new station. He takes tbe place of Sergt. Cullen, promoted to be Inspector. Dunbdin, October 29. A verdict of accidental death was returned at the inquest on tbe body of David Gillies, who fell down a shaft at the Walton Park Colliery. Haweiu, October 27. Entries for the Egmont A. and P. Show exceed those of last jear by about 10 per :ent.
