Swimming Contest.

o CATILL DEFEATS AMERICA'S CHAMPION. (Per Press Association.) London, October 27. The quarter of a mile swimming race, the first of the series between Ernest Cavill aud McCosker, the American champion, took place to day at Westminster baths McCusker, failing to obtain a backer, swam for tbe gate money. The men got away together, and Cavill quickly went to the front, leading by half a yard in the first length, a distance he increased to four yards at tbe end of the second length. During the fourth McCusker slowly overhauled the leader until the fifth length, when the men were swimmiug level, for some distance. Afterwards they swam neck and neck. Cavill then spurted and filu»t ahead, bat McCusker, answering gamely, was soon np lev^l again. Two lengths from home I Cavill made one more grand spurt, and won by three yards amidst loud applause Time, Gmin 26sec.
