The Suez Canal.

The British, Consular Report on the trade of Port Said for the year 1896 reviews the traffic of the Suez Canal at some length. The net tonnage of the vessels which passed through the Canal was 8,560,233, and of this over one-tenth, or, say, 871,490, represented shipping to and from Australia. For several years the Australian transit trade, as represented by tonnage, was stationary, but there has been a rather rapid increase since 1894, the figures being : — 1894, 7,98,367 tons ; 1895, 839,548 tons ; 1896, 871,490 tons. Of the grand total of 8,560,283 tons, no less than £„817,765 tons, or 68 per cent was British. Port Said is a large importer of coal, t-he total quantity received in 1896 being 1,115, 509 tons. As an instance of celerity, the report states the firm of Messrs Willis and Co. discharged a cargo of 5972 tons in 62 consecutive hours, being at the rate of nearly 100 tons per hour.
