Mass in Feilding on Sunday nexl at 11 a.m. A letter from Mr S. Goodbehere in connection with the Manchester Square will appear to-morrow. The Engineer of the Eiwitea County Council, Mr Charles Bray, junr., invitee tendern for public works as detailed in the advertisement. The committee of the Feilding Athletic Club will meet to adopt programme on Tuesday next at 8 p.m., in the secretary's office. The anniversary services at the Wcblevan Church yesterday were very largely attended. The Rev W. H. Judkins officiated both morning and evening. We regret to learn that Mr McManus who has been staying for some years with Mr Hitchman, is now lying seriously ill. Mr McManus served for many years in the army. Mr W. W. Corpe, of Makino, advertises that he is a cash buyer of dairy butter delivered at the factory. Mr Corpe has for sale some splendid Derwent potatoes, very cheap. At Melbourne recently Mr Justice Holroyd held that a husband was liable for the maintenance of his children, although the mother had obtained a divorce and been granted the custody of the children. The Secretary of the Feilding Bowling Club has received a notice from the secretary of the Palmerston Club notifying that the opening of the Palmerston green on Wednesday next has been postponed owing to the atrocious weather at present prevailing. A Melbourne restaurant-keeper, who came to financial grief last year and went off to Coolgardie with the best wishes of his creditors, has rewarded their confidence by remitting a cheque for payment of all his debts in full and a bit over. The surplus was expended on a dinner to celebrate the joyful event. The Secretary of the Public Library reports the following new magazines that have come to hand : — The Australasian, Punch, St James' Budget, The Queen, Review of Reviews, Illustrated London j News, Harper's Monthly Magazine, Girls and Boy's Own Paper, Nineteenth Century, English Mechanic, and Leisure Hours. At about 6.30 last evening two persons driving in a sulky ran into the post at Mr Carthew's corner in Manchester Btreet, with the result that the post was broken clean off. The vehicle did not capsize, but continued on its course, closely hugging the verandah posts along the street, into which the onlookers had expected to see them run. The Standard says : — Mr Hull, Inspector of Stock, had to order the destruction of four bullocks placed in the sale yards during the week. The animals were suffering from tuberculosis, but it is satisfactory to know that only two of them belonged to the Manawatu, the others having come from the Wairarapa. Mr Hull also had to destroy four beasts at Ohau, suffering from the same disease. A concert has been arranged to be held at Colyton on Friday next in aid of the school prize fund. Full particulars will be advertised to-morrow. It will be a most successful affair as well known amateur stars, from Awahuri, Feilding and Palmerston North have kindly promised to assist the local talent. The evening's amusement will then be concluded by a dance. At their meeting on Saturday last the Pohangina County Council decided on the motion of Cr Vicary and seconded by Cr Dickin, that application be made to the Minister for Lands for the sum of £550 for the purpose of strengthening the Apiti bridge at the eastern end shown to be weak by the last heavy flood, and which work was recommended as necessary by Captain Turner. Also that Messrs Pirani and Lethbridge, M.'s.H.R., be asked to support an application to the Government by this Council for a grant of JESSO for strengthening the Apiti bridge as recommended by Capt Turner. At their meeting on Saturday last Mr Leßrun, of the New Zealand Accident Insurance Company, waited on the PoPohangia County Council, to explain the provisions of the Employers Liability Act, by which an employer was made liable to pay compensation to any workman injured while working for him, whether as a contractor, sub-contractor, or workman. Mr Leßrun also explained a scheme which his company had adopted by which a County Council or Road Board could Insure men in their employ at a cost of 4Jd in the £ on the money expended on contracts or labor, and in case of accident a man would receive his full wages if hurt and up to .£SOO would be paid to his relatives if killed. This 4sd could be deducted from the men's wages or this council could do as some other local bodies did and stop 3d in the £, paying the other l£d themselves. The premium to be paid yearly in advance on the estimated amount to be expended in works ; in the event of the amount paid as premium being in excess of that required on the actual expenditure the difference would be refunded, or if the council paid a lesser sum than required they would then pay the difierence, Councillors seemed favorably inclined to insure I the workmen in their employ but decided to leave the matter over until next meeting for further consideration.
