Sir Wilfred Lanrier, Premier, in the course of a speech at Toronto, and replying to tbe charges made against him tbat in not demanding a preferential trade with Great Britain he hail betrayed the Canadian interests, declared that the denunciation of foreign treaties was necessary as a first step. He had not appealed to John Bull's business tense, but to his big heart. While he was willing to make every effort to develop the trade with America, be would net purchase that trade at the f expense and dignity of the Canadian I nation. | Tbe Hon W. S. Fielding, Minister of ; Finance of Canada, in the conrse of an , interview, stated tbat if America officially proposed to hold a commercial confer•nee with tbe Canadian GoTenraent, he wouid tn«et the tuggestioa ia th« right spirit. Friendly trade relations were moit desirable, both in Imperial and Canadian interests.
