Cecil Rhodes Again on Top.
o Lucky Cecil Rhodes ! Hio foes blundered to the last. The Radical malcontents determined to get up a debate somehow on the Committee's report, and as they could not expect their leaders to concur in a vote of censure on a report to which they were parties, a private member, Mr Stanhope, had to be pat up to move tbe vote. An animated but pointless debate ensued, its only special feature being the opportunity it afforded Mr Chamberlain of delivering on* of bis best speeches, in which he not only defended himself with brilliant success, but also pnt in a very powerful plea of extenuation for Mr Rhodes, whose vast services to the Empire ought, in his opinion, to be set against his one mistake. He declared plainly that there was no idea of punishing Mr Rhodes, either by prosecution or by removal from the Privy Council, as had been suggested by the malcontents. And so tbe vote of censure was negatived by an overwhelming majority, »nd Mr Rhodes is once more triumphant.
