HEROIC DEFENCE OF FORT GU LIST AN. LOSS of TWO BRITISH OFFICERS. A NEW ZEALANDER KILLED, (Per Press Association.) Calcutta, September 10. The details of the relief of Fort Gulistan show that the fort was heroically defended by the garrison, and that tho tribesmen were repeatedly repulsed at the point of the bayonet A night attack has been made on Colonel P. D. Jeffrey's camp at Rambat. L eutetiaots W. E. Tomkins and A. W. Bailey, of the 38th Bengal Infantry, were amongst those killed. Teheran, September 16. It is reported that Sir Henry Mortimer Durand, Minister Plenipotentiary and Consul General, will head a mission to the Ameer, with the objects of settling the disturbed relations between India and Afghanistan.
Calcutta, September 17. General Klles is making steady advance into the Mohmands' country, aud the force under his command has oc enpied Fort Gundab unopposed, after a toilsome march through barren hilly country devoid of roads, and impracti ciible for artillery. He lost 30 killed in the recent righting ou the Samana range. The Orakzais and Afridis have dis pcrsed, and have returned to their homes.
Later reports show that Fort Guhstan w as relieved by Brigadier General Biggs' force after three days' continuous fight* ing. The Commandaut's wife and four children were liviug in the fort, and uuderueut the siege along with the garrison.
Lieutenant Bailey was killed on the niybt of the attack. He was a New Zealander, aud along with Lieutenant Touikins exposed himself in directing tuo iufnutry against the attack. The li^ht from the camp fire and the bright moonlight enabled the tribesmen to aim fronj behind the rocks. The British casualties totalled 10 men.
