Nikau Notes
| From our own correspondent. j
Mr Louis lirown who left here in May last for England, returned home last week, having arrived by the Ruabine. He arrived in England two days after the Jubilee Day, but was in time to see many of tbe illumiua: ions. During bia stay in the World's Metropolis, Mr Brown visittd the principal places of interest there and, also, visited Kent, the home of the famous ftonmey Marsh sheep, and he Bays ho has seen better sheep of that, class in the colonies. Iv Kent he seldom met with anyone who had aeen a colonial, as those who go from here are literally lost among the vast populat on of the Mother laud. Jn the country, in some cases he found the English farmers a long way behind those of New Zealand and he states there are farming implements in use there which have long since been discarded by us.
Mr W. B;iker, another settler, long resident iv the Block and tips district, has made up his mind to leave us, having sold bis property, which consists of some 500 acre.", to Mr T. J. Smith, of Coiyton. Mr Baker has secured another property in r,he vicinity of Hawura, and leaves with his family for that town next week. Regrets are everywhere ex pressed at their departure, showiug the high esteem in which they are held. Mr Baker will be greatly missed in con nection with the school, in which he has shown a great iuterest. He resigned his position as Secretary and Chairman on Saturday last, this office bow being tilled by Mr R. W. Brown. It is to be hoped that Mr and Mrs Baker will find as many friends in their new home, as they are leaving behind them.
Mr G. Shannon has not been idle during the winter, and the reward of bin labour is now evident by a field of about five acres of springing oats, where stumps held undisputed possession last year at this time.
