Salisbury Block Notes.

[FROM OCR OWN CORRESPONDENT.! The Government ia still pushing forward the work of forming six-foot tracks in this district, and will soon have them completed to almost every section. In tome quarters there is a disposition to criticise the Government over its " pet bix foot tracks," but to the struggling bush settler who has more an eye to his own interest than to the supposed faults or failings of a Government, these tracks are a great boon. They certainly get pretty muddy in places in winter time, but that in the fault of the ground and the weather. They are far ahead of the wriggling, climbing muddy bush tracks which were the only means of getting out or into the block previous to the existence of these six foot tracks. These as a rule have a pretty fair grade ; they ars seldom more than one in fifteen, and long stretches of them loss than that, forming a ntriking contrast to the "up hill down dale " fashion of some Road Board tjrados. There is some talk about the Council taking over these tracks from the Government, with the intention of forming them into full width roads. It is to bs hoped if they do so they will keep as much as possible to the present grade which the Government has taken such pains and expense to form. When finally completed the roads in this block may be winding in places, but certainly the easy grade will more than compensate for the little extra length occasioned thereby. All the roads in Salisbury bave been cleared and tbe tracks so far formed under the co op. system, which has plenty of supporters in this district. Tbe custom of the Government in letting tbe work in small jobs to the settlers is certainly a great benefit to the latter. I understand that a meeting of ratepayers of Umutoi Riding has been arranged to be held on 7th September at 12 o'clock, mid»day, in the Umutoi wbare, Salisbury. Business: To discuss tbe advisability of the County Council taking over the roads from the Govern ment ; and to see what steps can be taken to proceed with the businesn of forming tbe roads full width. Mr Lethbridge, M H.R , has promised to be present, and it is important that all ratepayers should attend to make the meeting a success.
