On the 10th of this month there is to be a ball in aid of the Ashurst Brass Band funds, tbis ball will also celebrate tbe opening of Mr Williams' new Hall. Of late a number of lamprey hare been found in tbe Macawatu river at tbe Gorge. The foundation of the new Cbnrch of England will be laid matt Wednesday, when it is anticipated that a nnmber of tbe clergy in tbe district will be present. Tbe Ashurat Chess Club challenged the Palmerston Ches* Clnb to play a match, which challengn was at once accepted. In all probability tbe match will be played at Palmeroton on Wednesday next. Mr Jndkins, of the New Zealand Alliance, gave a very interesting lectors in the Salvation Army Barracks on Thursday evening last, Mr Ramble in the chair. The result of tbe lectmre was that several of tbe audience handed in tbeir names as mombers of the Alliance. The usual monthly meeting of the School Committee was belli on Wednesday last. Present— Mrssrs Gallicban (Chairman), Clarke, Hatchings, and Tremewan. The following accounts were passed for payment : —Messrs Brewer, £2 10s ; Lawrence, 17s 6d ; Davey, £2 11s and 11 4s Id ; S. Bead, ss. The master's report was received and read. Tbe average attendance for tbe last quarter was 153 7. It wad decided that in future tbe committee meet on the fust Monday in every week instead of Wednesday as heretofore. Previons to taking np her duties si postmistress at Sandon, Mrs Crichton was entertained at « farewell social given by tbe member* of the Wesleyaß Church. Mrs Crichton was also tbe recipient of a very nico writing desk and a copy of Sbakespear's works. Much regret was expressed by the members at having to bid farowell to snch an energetic member of the Church.
