THE STOCK MARKET.

The Egmont Farmers' Union report as follows :— On Monday, Angnst 9th, we held an unreserved clearing sale on account of Mr George Muir, at the Okaiawa yards, of his dairy stock, Sea. The cows were a good line, but rather backward. The attendance was large, and tbe bidding spirited, resulting in satisfactory prices. We qutte :— Cattle— Dairy cows, j£B 5s to J67; dairy heifers, £2 12s 6d to £6 ; 2 year heifers, £2 to £2 ss ; store cows, £1 8s to £1 10s ; 2J«year steers, £3 IS.

At Manaia, on the 11th, fully the advertised number of stock were yarded. Competition was better than of late, and as spring approaches w« anticipate a better demand for all classes of stock. We quote : —

Cattle - Dairy cows and heifers, £2 11s to £5 ; 2 year heifers, £2 la to £8 ; weanero, 15s to 17s.

Sbeep-Ewes (empty), 5s 3d ; woolly hoggets, 4s to 7s 3d.

Matthew Henry reports as follows :— At Pahiatua there was a good muster of stock, and also a good attendance of the public. The most of the sheep were quitted at auction at good prices, Cattle being chiefly composed of dry dairy stock, were a drug in the market. A good clearance was effected, however, before the day closed. At Palmerston on the 12th the few sheep forward were of good quality, but the bidding was by no means animated. The cattle were composed of a large and mixed entry of valueless dairy stock, which were in moat cases passed throngb the riDg without eliciting a bid. The volume of business done was very small. Quotations for sales as under:— Pahiatua — Dairy cows, L2ssto L 4 18s ; springing heifers, L3 3s to L3a ss; 18-month heifers, Ll 12s 6d ; weanera and yearlings, 17s. Sheep -Fat wethers, 12s; forward 4 tooth, 8s 9d to 10s 9d. Fat ewea, 9s ; empty call ewes, 2s 3d to 8s ; hoggets, 6a. Palraerston.— Catttle — Dairy cows, L3to L 5; store cows, Ll 5s to Ll lls; heifers in calf, L2lls; small weaners 7s. Sheep— Fat ewes, 9s 9d ; ewes in lamb, 7s 6d to Bs.
