Canterbury ' aud Kaikoura—s,l2l,39B and 5,196,712; ' increase, 75,314 Otago-3,995,496 and 4,022,441; increase, 26,945. Total— ' 1896, 19,138,493; 1897, 19,629,602; m- ' crease, 491,109.
