Law, the husband's petition, tbe grant ing of a decree nisi was postponed till Mr Justice Williams consnlts tbe other Judges as to whether tbe petitioner knew that his wife was married at the timr. It appeared that he bad been I entrapped, be'ieviDg ber a widow, bat they cohabited some time afterwards. John Stone, head of the firm Stone, Son and Co., and well known in connection with the publication of directones, died to-day, aged 57. | Timaru, August 3. The dronght which has parched the pastures, preventing tbe sown grain from even germinating for tbe past three months, was well broken to-day, a steady heavy rain Retting in this afternoon and continuing to-night. Auckland, August 4. An old identity is dead in the person of Robert McLeod, of Waihi, he arrived here from Sydney early in the thirties. Baron De Thierry at the age of 82, the surviving son of tbe late celebrated Baron De Thierry, of Hokianga, died today, in the Hone of the Little Sisters. He was poor, and leaves a widow and family. Tbe Salvation Army's Maternity Home at Ponsonby was formally opened today by Mr J. L. Wilsons, of tbe New Zealand Herald. A number of the clergy and laity of various denominations were present. News from the Urewera country states tbe Tnboe natives are assembled at Ruatahana settlement to meet tbe Hon. J. Carroll and Wi Pere to discuss politi* cal matters. The Ngatirengo tribe arrived from Roatoki last week and were received in the old Maori style. The Hon. Mr Hall-Jones, Minister for Public Works, accompanied by Mr Herries, M.H.R., arrived at Taupo on Saturday evening, having come by way ' of Rotorua and Wairakei. In the revision of its tariff, tbe Auckland Harbonr Board decided that raw sugar be rated at 1b 3d per ton, this beiug a compromise between tbe Is 6d proposed by tbe Revision Committee! and the request by tbe Company that the present rate of Is be adhered to. Tbe Auckland Board of Education has re-engaged Mi Petrie as Chief Inspectoi at £550 a year and travelling expenses. ItfVEBCAKGILL, AogßSt 3. The inquest on the lad Charles Lee, drowned at the Bluff on Sunday, dis- ' closed that he and two others were supplied with liquor in a hotel, and one of them also bought a bottle of whisky, which lee drank most of and became helplessly drunk- Tbe jury added a rider drawing the attention of the police to tbe manner in which tbe drink was supplied.
