In drawing attention to the advertisement which appears over leader to-day for the last time, re acconnts, we would like to point oat that those who have not taken advantage of the friendly hint trill have only themselves to blame for the consequences which will ensue. Subscribers to the Victoria Park fund are requested to meet in the Municipal Council Chambers on Monday afternoon at two o'clock. The Standard says:— Some prime wethers sold by Messrs Abraham and Williams yesterday realised the splendid price of 12s 4d, the highest yet obtained this season. The Nelson Mail urges the necessity for telegraphic or telephonic communication with the French Pass in view of the recent muhap to the Wainui. It adds that (he absence of it, and of a bsacon on the Beef Barrels, is a stigma on the administration of the Marina Department of the otlony. There are under the ocean, spreading to almost every civilised part of the world, no fewer than 1,167 submarine telegraph cables, having a total length of 142,790 nautical miles, and rppre senting a capital of nearly £40,000,000. Nearly all those cables have been manufactured at factories on the banks of the Thames. " You turned Mr Hannah inside out, and I got sick of it," was Mr Fisher's explanation to Mr Solomon for not having stayed in the Court while the auditor of the Ward Farmers' Association was being examined. The mysterious disappearance of the man Satberly, at Blenheim, has gained additional interest by a rumour published in a Nelson paper, to the effect, that, »wbile at Blenheim, a Nelson lady saw two men, whom she wonld again recognise, carrying a body to a boat lying on the river. Plain-Clothes Constable Cos has been in Blenheim for the past few days making enquiries, The railway working account of the revenue and expenditure to the terrain* ation of the four weekly period ending June 26tb, shows the total revenue to be £96,604 15s and the expenditure, £65,124 10s 6d. The revenue for the North Island lines amounted to £33,454 12s 2d, and the expenditure to £34,923 0s 8d ; on the South Island lines the revenue amounted to £63,050 2s lOd, and the expenditure to £40,201 10s 3d. For the corresponding period of last year the total revenue amounted to £02,543 7s 3d, and the expenditure to £58,947 9i 10d.— Times. To-day Mr Edwin King, of Colyton, who is already established in business there as a butcher, notifies that he has purchased the goodwill of the business hitherto carried on by Mr Dugald Henderson, in Forgusßon street, Feilding. Mr Henderson will act as manager for Mr King in Feilding, and all orders entrusted Mr Henderson will be promptly attended to. Mr Dugald Henderson desires that the liberal patronage extended to himself will be continued to Mr £. King. The Rev George Soltau continues his mission in Feilding to-morrow, preaching in the morning in the Presbyterian Church, and in the evening in the Drill Hall. During next week the services will be held in the Drill Hall each even ing at 730. On Monday evening Mr G. Soltau gives a lecture to men only. This lecture has already been given to thousands of men, aid has everywhere been largely attended, It deals with subjects tuat cannot be referred to in a mixed audience, and consists chiefly in a narrative of Mr Soltau's personal expediences in Great Britain, America, India and the colonies. On the same evening Mrs Soltau addresses the women only iv the Presbyterian Guurch. In this week's Gazette the statement of telegraph business done within the colony during the quarter ended June 30th shows that 476,649 ordinary telegrams, valued at £17,385 19s sd, were despatched, as against 405,976 telegrams of a value of £19,059 0s 7d, for the corresponding quarter of 1896. The nrgenfc telegrams sent numbered 26,05 7 , valued at £2249 11s 3d, and presß telegrams numbered" 43,675, valued at £1939 9s 2d. The total number of telegrams sent durinc the quarter was 581,187. valued at •122,253 8s sd, as against 49s,66l, valued a £23,970 2s 4d, for the corresponding period of 1896. The number of Government telegram*} sent during the past quarter was 51,512, valued at £55,72 19s lOd ; while for the same period of 1806 t!i« number sent was 56,818, valued at L62#o lls 7d.— Times. There was a vei-y fair attendance at the first smoke concert'of the season in the Bangitikei Club's rooms last evening and there wonld have been still more but for the Jockey Clnb meeting. Mr fiagnall (President of the Club) occupied the phair. The committee of the club had secured £be services of several performers, who gave {nose present a .treat that was highly appreciated, and 'won for the performers golden opinions. Mr Buckley gave several selections on the cornet and the loud applause showed that he pleased bis hearers exceedingly well. Mr Buckley is a master, band on the cornet, as also is Mr Brunette ou the clarionet. The latter gentleman also gave several items, and was loudly applauded {or his beaatjful rendition. Mr Heard was extra good on comic »ongj» and will receive a most hearty welcome to all future concerts. Among the other items songs were Riven by Messrs Hill, P. Thomson, C. Bray, sen*,, pickspn, Hcald, a reading by Mr Bagnall, and a recitatiop by Mr Lethbrjdge were very good. The committee pf the clnb are to be congratulated upon hay?n^. secured the services of spgh able perfo.rm.ers for the first smoke conoerfc of the club, apd the decided success of last nipht should ensure still greater success at future gatherings.
Additions are made to the entries for Mr Charles Carr's Feilding and Birmingham stock sales. Mr J. Meehan, of Apiti, and proprietor of the Cheltenham Hotel, will take possession of those premises on Monday the term of Mr T. Ryan's lease having expired. Captain Edwin telegraphed to day as follows :— Fine weather is to be expected in all parts of the country, with very cold night, northward of Thames and Manukau, and frost from thence southward. This being the last day of the shooting season, a large number of sportsmen went out with dogs and guns. At a comparatively early hour the firing was rapid and well sustained, but the casaalties were tew. Mr Carr held a very satisfactory sale at the Cheltenham Hotel of furniture and effects yesterday afternoon on behalf of Mr Ryan, who is giving up possession of the premises. There was a large attendance and bidding was brisk. Messrs Eastwood and Co., of Victoria House, Wanganni, cash drapers and clothiers, have taken premises in Manchester street, Feilding, in Mr Brennan's block and will commence business on Saturday, 7th August. Fnll particulars will be advertised on Monday. The largest book in the world, according to a recent lecture by Professor Max Muller, of Oxford, is the " Butho Daw ; or the Religious Codex of thn Buddhists." It is written on marble slates, 729 in number, which it takes a city of pagodas to house, for each slab has its own separate house. The gas works are now rapidly nearing completion and it is expected gas will be supplied to between fifty aDd sixty different premises to start with, wbich is yery satisfactory to the syndicate considering that when they first started the works in Palmerston only forty premises were connected. However there are now over 400 premises connected at Palmerston.
