Awahuri Notes.

♦ ."from oub own correspondent] The Dorothy Quadrille Assembly's plain and fancy dress ball, held in the hall last night, proved to be most enjoyable, notwithstanding the threatening state of tbe weather. About thirty couples were present. The room was prettily decorated with evergreens and ferns, while the refreshments left nothing to be desired. Great praise is due to the committee, who worked hard to make the ball a success. Mr A. Stuart made an efficient M.C., and the music was supplied by Mr Staff an a band in their well known style. Extras by Mr Buckley (cornet) were much appreciated. The most striking of the fancy dresses were — Starlight, Miss A. Stuart ; and grannie, Miss E. Glanville. The other fancy dresses were— Gipsy, Miss K. Fowles ; romp, Miss A. Fowles ; ivy, Miss Johnson ; Red Cross nurses, Miss Johnson and Miss Mends ; old English gentleman, Mr D. Bennett ; nigger, Mr Duigan ; butcher, Mr H. Stewart. Thompson Bros., of Kairanga, bad a bullock killed by lightning during the late thunderstorms. On Saturday night a young man on his way borne to Kairanga front Awahuri (where he bad bought a shovel) was knocked off his torse, and tbe handle of the shovel singed. The lightning first struck a 3ft tree in Mr Sanson's, smashing it into pieces, and scattering tbe pieces far and wide. The lightning passed across the road a little in front of this young man (lucky for him), and then it struck a tree on the Hon Walter Johnson's property, which it set on fire. Neither horse nor rider were injured.
