THE AORANGI BRIDGE.

TO THE EDITOR. Sir,— l would like to call the attention of tbe authorities, through your columns, to the necessity of at once doing something in the way of protecting tbe bank at the approachment of th« recentlyerected structure across tbe Oroua at Aorangi. For some dayH, through the amount of wet weather wo hare experienced, there has been a strong rash of water in tbe river, th« main body of which strikes almost fair on the bank immediately under the end of the bridge, and the result has been that large portions of the bank bare fallen away, and the end support for the stringers has now diminished somewhat. The railway people hare thought it wiie to pro tect their bridge by piling concrete block" up the bank, at>d these have aided somewhat in turning the water into tha traffic bridge approaches. I hope as little delay at possible will be made before this matter is attended to, and thus relieve a burdan from the minds of those people whose business necessitates their crossing the bridge daily. Also, while on the subject, I would call attention to the pools of water which collect after a little rain on the old portion of the bridge, extending the full width of the decking, and allowed to remain for some days— till they are dried up, in fact. These are a source of annoyance to pedestrians and cyclists, who have to wade through at a depth of several inches in places, which could he alleviated by boring a few auger holes through the decking. I am, Ac, P.M. July 15th, 1897.
