Apiti Notes.
I FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT.] A football match was played her* on Saturday last between " Beer Drinkers " and " Water Drinkors," resulting in a victory for the latter. From inform* tion received the match was pretty evenly divided as to the respective merits of the contestants, bat the " Beer Drinkers " (some of them) say that the "Water Drinkers" had a "still" on their side— whatever that may mean. It was evidand, however, that the " Beer Drinkers " had the best in the matter of avoirdupois and I have heard crack players pass the remark that such an acquisition to a team is a consideration when some of the " swift " members of the opposite team want " flattening out." Your football readers will know the meaning, I presume, of the quotations I have given. The Apiti footballers seem to bare " palled themselves together " as they term it. At tha commencement of the season they were losing at each contest they had with their opponents, but by the last two matches they played they have regained their lost laurels and are ■ow determined to carry all before them. In their match with the Rangiwahia men on Saturday last they again obtained the victory. The Apiti juniors played the Ranpiwahia juniors on Saturday weak aod won. The Good Templars held a social in their hall on Saturday last. There was a good attendance. The " bill of fare " consisted of songs, readings, recitations, and a coffee supper. The logs and stumps are being cleared and the primevial look of the township is being demolished. Tha Pohangina County Council has placed a quantity of metal on the principal portion of the Main Street which will, no doubt, be an improvement after awhile. If we go on building at the present rate the " leading lights " of tha settlement will soon be claiming the right of forming the township into a Borough. The public peond is at last erected. The next step will be the appointment of a ranger and pound keeper. It in predicted that the ranger will have |a lively timo of it for tho first lew weeks after hit. appointmtut, as there are soma owners of stray stock here who can use the " unruly member " pretty fraely judging from the "samples" I hare heard— in the distance. The school opened hero to-day after the mid winter vacation. The newly appointed teacher lias taken charge. There was a quiet wedding is Apiti on Wednesday last. Mr P. Phillips and Miss Curteis were united. The ceremony was performed at the house of the parents of the bride by the Rev Mr Davys. After the wedding breakfast tha party re» turned to their home in the township where of course they were treated to the usual serenading by the youngsters. Tha happy couple wero the recipients of a number of useful presents. Mr Oeorge Prince hai some sheep worried by dogs a few days since. Two of the sheep have died and it is expected that others will not survive.
