RECORD REIGN MATTERS.

(to the editob.) Sir, —l did not intend answering the letter in Tuesday's issue signed anonymously by a " Feildiug Storekeeper," bat cannot let it go by altogether, as be quite misunderstood my letter. When I said " to start with Feildiug had done nothing previously to celebrate tbe record reign," I naturally did not refer to improving the Recreation Ground, as that is an event which bas not yet taken place. On the 22nd of June which was, par excellence, the record reign day, our town, to put it mildly, did certainly not sbinevery much. How much of the £40 collected towards the Victoria Park was subscribed by tbe storekeepers I don't know, but if they did so as a " Feilding Storekeeper " says in sums varying from one to two guinea?, they were generous enough and ought all to be excluded. By supporting tbe ball I meant not entirely by buying tickets, as this, of course, is not within the reach of all, but by trying to get others to go and assisting in little ways to make the ball a success, and show their loyalty. " Feilding Storekeeper " asks: Do tbe country people support the storekeepers from charitablcmotives ? I say in tbe majority of cases they do to a great extent. For instance, what is to prevent us getting our stores out from Home or even from Wellington ? in which case one would get much more variety, and naturally tbe stores would come far cheaper than by patronising local industries, but I feel sure that plenty of others besides myself prefer to benefit the town (from charitable motives if you like), by spending our money in the place. I never said one word in my letter about not receiving full value from the stores for money spent in Feilding, and it seems to me that this was uncalled for. I am, 4c, C. H. Coote. Wavertree, July 7th, 1897.
