Newspaper Errors.
— -• Even tho worm turneth and rendetb. its oppressor. The editor of the Taieri Advocate in the issue of tbat paper of tbe 3rd instant blew off the following :— The average editor has a bad five minutes after every publication of his paper when he comes across errors that bave either escaped the proof-reader's attention, or been missed by the correcting compositor. A few more white hairs were added to our erstwhile raven locks wheu in a recent issue we saw tbat flour had been spelled " flower." Our con solation came next day when we saw in our big brother tbe Otago Daily Times cremation spelled as " creamation," the comp. had probably been setting up the report of the Dunedin agricultural show. These little mistakes will happen in all offices, but it is amusing to hear the criticisms of those people who think they are clever wheu tbey notice such small errors The same people who 1 criticise a wrongly spelled word think the error is owing to the ignorance of the writer, the criticising idiots being quite ignorant of how easy it is for a letter to be dropped into a wrong box. If the same first class fools had to read proofs for hours at night with the blaze of a kerosene light np against their eyes they wonld better understand bow easy it is for a reader to miss these errors, aud the same first-class fools and copper bottomed lunatics would then wonder at country papers, on the whole, being so free of mistakes.
