Volunteer Items.

Tbe Manchester Rifles held a Government parade last night in the Drill Hall. There was a good attendance. After the nanal inspection the corps was exercised in company moTements and manual and firing exercises by Captain Kirtoa and Lieut. Barltrop respectively. Nine recruits were sworn in. During the evening a meeting of tha Finanoe and Management Committee was held. It was resolTed to thank the Jubilee Committee of Marton for their kindly expressions towards the corps in a letter which has already been published. A team will be entered to compete for Messrs Sargood, Son, and Ewen's cup. The Secretary was instructed to obtain from Mr Dahl, of Palmerston, price for a flag to be hoisted over Drill Hall on parade days. It was decided to give prizes to the value of about £3 to those who attend most parades during Volunteer year 1897-8, three prizes. Tbe Secretary was also instructed to write to those members of tbe corps who were irregular in attendance at parades, domauding the immediate return of uniforms, arms, and accoutrements, and it was decided that all members must attend parades regularly, otherwise they will be dismissed from the corps. It was resolved that all applications for ammunition must be made to tbe secretary, Vol. £. H. Fisher, two or three days previous to the time tbe ammnnitiop is required, and that a cheque must accompany each application. The Secretary was instructed to write to the Napier Volunteer* re organising Morris tube competition. were passed for payment and the meeting adjourned.
