An Amusing Incident.
Some consternation was caused amongst local residents yesterday afternoon, while amusement was afforded to others. Several bead of cattle were being driyen through the town by a settler and as they had not been accustomed to town life, but bad lived a life of freedom with only an occasioned visit from man, they gave their drovers a merry time when they got into the town by running into sundry premises and charging at several people. Some of the incidents in connection with the visit of these wild cattle to the domains of civilisation were very amusing -at least to the onlookers if not to the parties more immediately concerned. In one case a bullock charged a business man and with the impetus of the charge fell over the prostrate form of the person in question, and against a wall with the result that he (the bullock) was slightly stunned and lay for a few minutes. In another caie one of the wild animals was making tor a lady on a bike — probably disapproving of this method of locomotion. The lady promptly dismounted and leaving her bicycle in the road, made for * place of safety. One bullock developed a desire to test the quality of the beverages dispensed at the Feilding Hotel, but being a " prohibited person " his progress was barred in a passage. Another had a desire to inspect the inside of a stable, the proprietor of which brought a pitchfork into requisition to ejeot his unwelcome visitor, who resented the intended ejectment with the result that the stable-keeper retreated. An independent gentleman with a desire to show his prowess and bravery, cigarette in mouth and arms outspread, went a few paces on the road to stop one of the animals, who, not being aware of the kindly intention of the gentleman, kept on his wav with bis bead towards the ground and an angry look iv bis eye. Not being desirous of a " rise in the world," the gentleman thought discretion the better part of valour, and beat a hasty retreat. In another case one of the animals' went to interview a well-known land agent but was unable to secure % satisfactory meeting. There were many other humourous incidents bnt fortunately no one was injured.
