Crossing Sheep for Export.
An experiment in crossing sheep for export purposes has been carried out at the experimental farm at BatLurst. At the end of May, 1895, a Shropshire, a Lincoln, a Southdown, a Dorset Horn, and a Cheviot ram were each put with forty merino ewes. Fifty^seven head of fat wethers, made up of these crosses, •were exhibited, but not for competition, at the late show in Sydney. It was the opinion of both the judges of fat abeep and breeders that those Bathnrst sheep were admirably adapted for the export trade so far as age, shape, weight and quality were concerned, while their condition was very prime. Spmo of the judges were greatly taken with the Dorset Horn crosses which were described aB remarkably well grown, good shaped and robust sheep, while the Southdown Shropshire and Cheviot crosses were preferred by others. Their average weights were .—Lincoln and Merino, 651 b; Shropshire, 631 b; Southdown, 59}lb ; Dorset Horn, 64}lb ; Cheviot, 65iib. __________ _____
