The Old Story.
(Per Press Association.) Auckland, June 7. John Douglas, the well-known land agent, appeared at the Supreme Court this morning to answer various charges upon which be was committed for trial. Mr J. A Tole cuoducted the prosecution, and Mr Theo. Cooper appeared for tbe defence. Tbe prisoner pleaded guilty to Bereral charges of theft to the amount of £1700 and one charge of forgery In passing sentence His Honor said, " Prisoner, I certainly regret to see a man in your position who has hitherto been of very good reputation, but I regret to be compelled to add that that reputation has been obtained entirely tbrongb falso pretences. It is most unfortunate that we do find occasionally that persons are able to deceive others to a very large extent through having a supposed good character, and, worst of all. by making a profession of religion. On each of the charges to which you have p'eaded guilty you are sentenced to bo imprisoned for five years, the sentences to run concurrently."
