The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette. Published Daily. THURSDAY, JUNE 3, 1897. THE NEW POST OFFICE.
O The suggestion made by a correspondent yesterday to the effect that the new Post office building which it is understood the Government propose to erect, should be placed in the centre of Manchester Square, is not a new one. In a plan of the town of Feilding now before us, wo find that a portion of the square is mniked od' for a post office, clearly and distinctly. It was therefore the intention of the founders of the settlement th« land so allotted should h? used for the purpose designated, and no other. The exigencies of the early days of tbe settlement made it compulsory on those in charge ' of affairs, and afterwards the Town Board, to make the roads as they now are through the square. Things have, however, changed since then very much for the better, both as regards population and the prosperity of the settlers, and consequently there can exist no vei v valid reason why that site should not, in the near future, be occupied. The reason the Government selected a site near the Couit House was because it is the property of Lhe Crown and consequently it would not be necessary to expend a largo sum of money in the purchase of a site. That rule would apply with equal force with respect to the site in Manchester ' Square. As far as the convenience 1 of the public, especially tbe commercial public, is concerned the last 1 named would be the better in every w.iy. Ot course it will be necessary for the liorough Council to take the , initiative, and many of the burgesses hope they will bring up the subject 1 for discussion at the meeting to-night.
