RECORD REIGN-PAYING DEBTS.
(to the editor.) Sir,— l was amused the other day at one of your correspondents suggesting that the Diamond Jubilee should be ■ celebrated by the payment of debts. , Trnly there is nothing" uew under tbe son ! I wonder if your correspondent was aware that a similar suggestion was not only made but carried out tome 2000 yearn ago by the heathen inhabitants of Carthaginia, whose custom it was to celebrate certain holy day* by paying their debts. Being new to the colony, 1 have not yet learnt whether any holy day is celebrated in New Zealand after this fashion, but, if not, may it not be worthy of our consideration ? Keeping so many festivals, surely wo might spare one for this convenient and (to the creditors at least) profitable purpose. I present tbe idea with my best compliments to our political and ecclesiastical leaders. I am, etc., F. Stubbs.
