The Feilding Star, Oroua & Kiwitea Counties Gazette TUESDAY, JUNE 1, 1897. THE ACCLIMATISATION SOCIETY.

♦- — The meeting to be held to morrow evening in the offices of the Manchester Boad board to consider the question of the appointment of a local committee of the Wellington Acclimatisation Society, should be attended by every one who is either directly or indirectly interested. Apart from the protection to be afforded to imported game, a local committee can be of gieat use in a variety of ways and especially in initiating a movement to have the owners of sheep killing dogs punished and the animals destroyed, or rendered incapable of doing injury to valuable flocks. Half the value of the sheep now killed or smothered by dogs, if donated to the Society, would afford ample revenue to keep it going tor a year. A single sheep owner may, and does think himself lucky if he loses only a few sheep during the year from this ciiiisp, but when it is remembered there are five hundred if not more owners in this neighborhood, the aggregate of the money value thus absolutely wasted, is very considerables Why the prevention of this loss should ci me within the ken of the Acclimatization Society is becan^e in too nimy instances it is the alleged sporting dog which doc-s the mischief, find the dog generally belongs to an equally alleged sportsman, who from that fact is to sotr.e extent under the direct control of the Society as the holder of a licence, or as an object of interest to Society's ranger should he be an unlicensed poacher.
