(Per Press Association.) Dannevikke, This Day. Speaking at Mr Hunter's banquet Captain Russell declared the Government had increased the public debt by over four millions. Dealing with the land policy he strongly favored the freehold tenure and condemned the Fair Rent Bill. New Zealand, he thought the most heavily taxed of the British Empire. The opposition were now of numbers and intelligence sufficient to resist the Government from borrowing and squandering, and the imposing of further taxation.
